Photographing Family at Redfish Lake

My parents, sisters and I have been visiting Redfish Lake, Idaho for as many summers as I can remember. Before that, my dad and his family were regulars. This year, our trip had special significance, as I was reuniting with my sister and brother-in-law for the first time in nearly two years. Luca would finally get to meet his cousins in person!

About three hours northeast of Boise, Redfish Lake offers a no-fuss immersion into nature. We cook family meals at the cabin and hand wash the dishes each evening. You can rent boats on the lake and hike some of the most beautiful trails imaginable. There's live music on the lawn on Fridays. You can wear sweatpants to the bar and look like you belong. The only rule at the bar is no cell phones, which we learned the hard way.

Speaking of technology, cell service at the cabins is spotty at best, with a dial-up-quality internet over at the lodge. You’re forced to move a little slower and be a little less available. And over time, the lack of connection becomes a blessing instead of a nuisance.

Some of this year’s trip highlights: snapping a family photo with everyone in it, despite forgetting my camera remote (below); chatting fireside with my sisters about life, choices, and struggles; realizing my sweet niece is no longer a baby, but a fiery, full-fledged kiddo with opinions, and capturing this special time in our family history (before Baby #2 arrives in January!) with some of my favorite photos to date.
